About Lucy Ward

Lucy Ward creates atmospheric prints about landscapes and the natural world. She is fascinated by the way changes in time, light or weather can make the familiar shift into something strange and wild. Her cinematic approach to lighting creates a sensation of expectant stillness, as if the landscape is caught just before or after an event, like the frames of a film between scenes. In her prints of wildlife, each bird or animal is based on an individual she has observed in its own habitat. Her drawings convey the character and behaviour of that particular creature, recording her experience of that interaction and exploring watching and being watched. She draws attention to claws, feathers and beaks – the tools that have evolved to help the animal survive. Lucy uses a variety of techniques, including etching, aquatint, drypoint and monoprint, and she makes her prints at Thames-Side Print Studio and in her studio on the same site. Her work has been exhibited at the Royal Academy of Arts Summer Exhibition and galleries in London and Surrey, and she is a member of Greenwich Printmakers.
