Caroline Macdonald

Caroline Macdonald is interested in different notions of time; from a transitory shift of light to reworking ancient artifacts or historical paintings which have stood the test of time. She uses drawing and photography in the first instance to make detailed records of her subjects. Back in the studio she deconstructs and reconstructs these responses in novel ways to render the familiar strange. Temporalities alter, subjects’ sediment and compress through different generations of print technology to envision strange new ‘now’s’. Caroline curates a fragmented patterning using the language of error and contrast. The slip slide of the digital glitch, marbling, stains and stencils create chromatic aberrations, fissures and the unexpected where the usual distinctions between one thing and another blur and intertwine.

Bio Caroline Macdonald is an Oxford / London based printmaker working across two and three dimensions. She has a background in printed textiles design and art education. In 2023 she completed a MA in Print at the Royal College of Art. In her print practice, she treats the museum like a ‘garden’, selecting the choicest specimens ‘ripe for the picking’ to reflect on her personal past and our moment in time.
