Artists First at the National Portrait Gallery London

Artists First at the National Portrait Gallery

6 Sep till 7 Sep 2025

Mary Evans, Charmaine Watkiss

Mary Evans (5-203) and Charmaine Watkiss (4-113) have been commissioned alongside artists Helen Cammock, Giana De Dier, Małgorzata Mirga-Tas, Ravelle Pillay, Mary Reid Kelley and Patrick Kelley and Soheila Sokhanvari to create new portraits that reclaim untold narratives for display alongside works from the National Portrait Gallery’s Collection.

These specially produced site-specific works, including installation, textile, painting, photomontage, drawing and film, will be interspersed throughout the Gallery, in dialogue with the Collection to respond to past and present histories, explore absent narratives and overlooked lives, and consider issues of representation, identity, memory and belonging.

Drop in to take part in a variety of free activities throughout the opening weekend on 6th-7th September, including a curator-led tour, pop-up artist talks and a workshop run by Mary Evans.
