Liam Hassan-Beserekumo is a self-taught artist with learning disabilities. He specialises in semi-abstract painting, figuratively influenced images, buildings and responses to his feelings at the time of painting.
Liam says, "I tend to work in phases producing many paintings of similar style for several months and then move onto new ideas. There is no set rule to this. A phase begins and ends according to my change of mood, interests and the need for a new challenge. All my work is 'Untitled' as I think that titles limit the viewers’ and my interpretation of the pieces. I enjoy hearing what each individual sees in the paintings. What they sometimes see is entirely different from what I imagined. That is the great thing about abstract art. I produce my art as part of what I call ‘thought therapy’. When I first began painting it helped me relax my mind and emotions and channel them into a positive creative process. Over the past twelve years as an artist I have used painting as a means of expression, recovery and progress.” Liam began his art career while attending a day centre in east London. He then moved out of the day centre to his current studio at Thames-Side Studios in 2012. He strongly believes that his own progression can be used to encourage others who attend day services but feel stuck, unable to express their feelings, lack independence and are in need of inspiration.
